Our Manila-Macau-Hong Kong Trip - A Dreadful Experience
We're presently in Hong Kong and staying at the Ah Shan Hostel. We got in from Macau yesterday early morning, about 3 am. Why? Here's the story.
We were booked on the Cebu Pacific flight to Macau from Manila on flight 5J362. We are PAL flyers and so we were at the airport about 3 hours before our scheduled departure which was at 7:30 pm. To my dismay, even at 3 hours prior to ETD, the check-in counters were still not open. They did when we, the passengers on that flight who were already there, decided to line up after an hour of waiting. I believe they were forced to open the counters because many of us went to complain about it. I mean it did say on the ticket to be at the counters at least 2 hours prior to the departure. It was disappointing enough that we had to wait for us to get checked in but it was equally disappointing that we were not able to find any seat at the NAIA International Airport.
Apparently, the Cebu Pacific delay had started in the morning. It was 7:15 pm when they announced that our flight would be delayed. The reason they gave was because of overbooking. Actually, it really meant they oversold tickets. I wonder why airlines would do that? So, anyway, they tried to bribe some of us to stay by offering a two way ticket with a confirmed flight the following day and an overnight stay at a hotel. I was telling my husband that if they would offer about 100 dollars or so, I'd grab it. We couldn't just take the opportunity because we had a confirmed booking here at the hostel.
Finally, at 8:30 pm we were allowed to board the plane only to find out that there was another delay. The captain had announced that we had to wait for some documents before we could take off and it meant another 40 minutes of waiting. It took 1.5 hours for Cebu Pacific to fix the delay.
The flight lasted for almost 2 hours. We got to the Macau airport and were lined up at the taxi stand when Boyet's cousin texted to say that he was picking us up. From there, we went to some restaurant in Macau, I think it is called the Golden Island, ate a bit and proceeded to the Ferry terminal. It was already almost 1:30 am.
The Ferry we took was the TurboFerry. I thought we had made a mistake of buying the ticket because we got the one to Hong Kong when were supposed to go to Kowloon. But at that time of the day, that was the only one available. I got a bit worried. This is the first time for any of us to travel to Hong Kong and being in a foreign country where most people do not speak english, it is really quite scary.
The Ferry ride took us 1 hour. It was rather hard for us to bring our stuff. I brought a suitcase for my and my daughter's things while my husband brought a bag, his camera bag and his Thinkpad. 3 pcs of luggage for him and 1 for me. But that 1 luggage was really hard to transport. Why, because the ferry had a narrow path going to the dock (I think you call it the plank) and the staff were unlike the Filipinos who would readily help their customers when they see them having some difficulty. Hurrah for Filipinos! From the terminal in Hong Kong Island, we took a cab to our hotel.

Philippine Airlines - The Better Airline in the Philippines
I used two airlines just 24 hours after I had written about the difference of PAL and Cebu Pacific. I had gone to Roxas City to pay my respects to my uncle who passed away. Going there, I flew via Cebu Pacific. Coming home to Manila, I used PAL. It sure is a blessing that I did that.
The main differences:
1. The airport - NAIA 2, PAL's airport is a hundred fold better. It's less crowded, the crowd seems to be more civil and the place doesn't smell like musk. the Domestic Airport is where Cebu Pacific flies from. Sometimes you just need to see a contrast to appreciate the one that you have.
2. The Flight - Take off and landing are better at PAL. There's no shaking you up and down and sideways. It's just the smooth flight all the way from start to finish.
3. Noise control - there were kids in both flights but I noticed that the noise was not too loud in the PAL flight.
So, like I said in my earlier blog, I still am a PAL customer. Happy to be one. But I won't hesitate to use Cebu Pacific if I really need to. It's an airline for Juan not Juana. haha!

Trip to Macau - Creating an Itinerary
Whew! I never thought preparing for a trip could be so exhausting. Or maybe I've just forgotten how it is to get ready for a family holiday. It has so far cost me sleepless nights and huge eyebags in the morning, not to mention that my sleep pattern has been altered to that of GMT -8:00, being awake in the wee hours of dawn and asleep until noon.
Cebu Pacific recently had an PHP888 promo for all its international flights. After all taxes and charges had been added, it amounted to about 4,600 pesos or so. It was the perfect opportunity for us to travel abroad after not having done so for the last 2 years. Instead of taking a trip locally, why not go abroad? After all, part of the reason for travelling is to familiarize Ikee with the place which she will study about in the Social Studies subject next school year. Second year in PCSHS has Asian History. Social Studies has always been boring to her. But travelling makes it interesting. So, why not hit two birds with one stone?
This time it would be Macau-Hong Kong-Zhuhai. It should've been Beijing after all Chinese history revolves around it. But it must be so boring for my husband that when presented with a choice of Shanghai-Beijing and Macau-Hong Kong, he chose the latter. So, I said what the heck? Macau and Hong Kong are Special Administrative Regions and Zhuhai is part of mainland China. We're getting 3 histories for the price of one.
I know very little of Macau and Hong Kong but I absolutely did not know Zhuhai was even part of the globe! But, the adventurous person that I am, I started to buy our tickets from the Cebu Pac website which endlessly bumped me off until i finally got our booking for 7 nights! I couldn't do anything. It was my first time to book online with them and from what I heard before, I had to get the first schedule available for me.
I am so used to coordinating travel plans for my family even when I myself am not familiar with the place. Usually, I would have read heavily about the place before I even book. But with this trip, it's the other way around. I got to learn about the places only after we had purchased our tickets. So, I then I found out that travelling to HK and Macau aren't so cheap after all. Zhuhai however is a different story.
The more I learn about Zhuhai, the more it becomes inviting to me. It has cheap hotels and has both beaches and hot springs which I like going to. Not only that, it's a shopper's paradise. Of course I've not gone there yet and might be proven wrong. But so far, from the virtualtourist.com traveller's reviews and reviews from both Yahoo travel and Trip Advisor, I've been able to locate Hotels and interesting spots which I have not heard of in the past. All hail the net!
The challenge is to be able to come up with an itinerary which would be both interesting and affordable. So far, I've come up with the idea of spending 2 days in zhuhai, 3 days in hong Kong, ang 2 days in Macau.
Let's see if I can meet the challenge. 25k?
